How do I write and publish a book?

I am interested in writing a book. Maybe start as an e-book then do a published book. The thing is I have no idea where to start. Are there restrictions to an ebook. And if I do an ebook, I would like to be the only one to distribute it. What do I need to do to make this possible?

if ive sold an e-book online which has been bought by US customers, do i need to register copyright?

ive been selling this ebook since 2005, but it says on copyright.gov that i need to register copyright with them within 3 months if i publish a work in the us?! I am a UK citizen. I sell my product online over UK webspace which US people buy which counts as publication in the US to them.
